6 Days / 5 Nights Mount Kilimanjaro Trek

Umbwe Route – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Route

The Umbwe Route is one of the steepest and most direct approaches to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It begins with a demanding ascent through dense rainforest before joining the Southern Circuit at Barranco. The route is known for its dramatic scenery, quieter lower sections and challenging terrain. As the trek progresses, the landscape changes from rainforest to moorland, alpine desert and finally the arctic summit zone. The route is best suited to experienced and physically fit trekkers who are comfortable with steep ascents and challenging mountain terrain.

The Expedition

6 days on the mountain.

A closer look at each stage of the journey.

01

Day

Moshi/Arusha to Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

900m - 1,600m - 2,850m

Rainforest

~1 hour drive + 11km hiking

5-7 hours hiking

After breakfast at your hotel, you will meet your guide and complete a thorough equipment check before departing for Umbwe Gate at approximately 1,600 metres. After registration and preparation at the gate, the trek begins with a steep and direct climb through dense montane rainforest. The Umbwe trail is known for its steep character from the very beginning, with the path following ridges and narrow sections through the forest. The demanding ascent requires a steady pace and careful footing. You will continue climbing through the forest toward Umbwe Cave Camp at approximately 2,850 metres. After arriving at camp, you will have dinner and rest in preparation for another demanding day.

02

Day

Umbwe Cave to Barranco Camp

2,850m - 3,960m

Moorland

6km

4-6 hours

After breakfast, you continue the steep ascent as the dense forest gradually gives way to moorland vegetation. The trail becomes more exposed, revealing dramatic views of the surrounding mountain landscape and the Southern Icefields. You continue climbing toward the Barranco Valley, where the route joins the Southern Circuit. The day’s trek is relatively short in distance but remains demanding because of the steep terrain and increasing altitude. You arrive at Barranco Camp at approximately 3,960 metres, situated beneath the impressive Barranco Wall. After dinner, you will rest and prepare for the following day’s trek.

03

Day

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

3,960m - 4,035m

Alpine

5km

4-5 hours

After breakfast, you begin the day with the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. The climb involves scrambling over rock sections and using your hands for balance in places, but it is non-technical and does not require climbing equipment. Once above the wall, the trail continues across a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp at approximately 4,035 metres. This shorter day allows your body to continue adjusting to the increasing altitude while giving you time to rest before the ascent toward Barafu Camp. You will have dinner and spend the night at Karanga Camp.

04

Day

Karanga to Barafu Camp

4,035m - 4,673m

Alpine desert

4km

4-5 hours

After breakfast, you leave Karanga Camp and continue toward Barafu Camp at approximately 4,673 metres. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you enter the alpine desert zone, with little vegetation surviving at this elevation. The route is relatively short but involves a significant gain in altitude. Upon reaching Barafu Camp, you will have lunch and settle in for the afternoon. Your guide will conduct a detailed summit briefing and equipment check, ensuring that you have everything required for the summit attempt. An early dinner will be served before you rest for several hours in preparation for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

05

Day

Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

4,673m - 5,895m - 3,100m

Arctic to forest

17km

12-16 hours

You will wake around midnight and begin the final ascent toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The climb begins slowly through the darkness as you ascend over volcanic scree toward the crater rim. Your guide will maintain a steady pace to help conserve energy and manage the effects of altitude. You will reach the summit around sunrise, where you can enjoy spectacular views across the surrounding landscape. UHURU PEAK – 5,895 M After reaching Uhuru Peak, you will spend a short time at the summit for photographs and celebration before beginning the descent. The descent takes you back toward Barafu Camp, where you will have a short rest before continuing toward Mweka Camp. As you descend, the landscape changes dramatically from the high alpine environment through moorland and eventually back into the rainforest. You will arrive at Mweka Camp at approximately 3,100 metres, where you will have dinner and rest after this long and demanding summit day.

06

Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi/Arusha

3,100m - 1,640m - 900m

Rainforest

10km hike + drive

3-4 hours hiking

After breakfast, you begin the final descent through the lush montane rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail gradually descends through the forest, providing a final opportunity to enjoy the vegetation and scenery of Kilimanjaro. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate. You will then meet your vehicle for the transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your Mount Kilimanjaro trek.
