Shira Route

7 Days Shira Plateau Adventure

The Shira Route is a scenic western approach to Mount Kilimanjaro that begins high on the mountain at the Shira Plateau. By driving directly to the high-altitude trailhead, the route skips the lower rainforest section and allows trekkers to begin their adventure in the open moorland of the plateau. The route follows the western side of Kilimanjaro before joining the Southern Circuit, where trekkers experience the dramatic Lava Tower, Barranco Valley and the famous Barranco Wall. It then continues toward Barafu Camp for the summit attempt before descending through the Mweka Route. The high starting elevation makes proper acclimatization particularly important. The itinerary therefore includes gradual altitude gain and a “climb high, sleep low” section through Lava Tower and Barranco.

The Expedition

7 days on the mountain.

A closer look at each stage of the journey.

01

Day

Moshi/Arusha to Shira Gate to Shira 1 Camp

900m - 3,500m - 3,610m

Moorland

~3 hour drive + 5km hiking

3-4 hours hiking

After breakfast at your hotel, you will meet your guide for a final equipment and gear check before beginning the drive toward the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The vehicle climbs through the forest and heath zones before reaching Shira Gate at approximately 3,500 metres, giving you a significant head start compared with routes that begin trekking from the lower rainforest. After completing the registration and park entry procedures, you begin a relatively short trek across the open Shira Plateau toward Shira 1 Camp at approximately 3,610 metres. The open landscape provides the first views of Kibo, the highest volcanic cone of Kilimanjaro, rising ahead of you. Upon arrival at camp, you will have time to rest, enjoy dinner and settle in for your first night at altitude.

02

Day

Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp

3,610m - 3,850m

Moorland

7km

4-5 hours

After breakfast, you continue across the beautiful Shira Plateau toward Shira 2 Camp. Today’s route is relatively gentle, providing valuable time for your body to adjust to the altitude before the trail becomes more demanding. The landscape is characterized by open moorland, volcanic formations and expansive views toward Kibo and the surrounding highlands. You will arrive at Shira 2 Camp at approximately 3,850 metres, where you will have time to rest and, if conditions permit, take a short acclimatization walk around the camp. Dinner will be served before an overnight rest.

03

Day

Shira 2 to Barranco Camp

3,850m - 4,600m - 3,960m

Alpine desert

10km

6-8 hours

Today is an important acclimatization day as you follow the principle of “climb high, sleep low.” You leave Shira 2 and gradually ascend toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you enter the alpine desert zone. After spending time at Lava Tower, the trail descends into the beautiful Barranco Valley, allowing you to sleep at a lower elevation than the highest point reached during the day. The descent brings a dramatic change in scenery, with the towering Barranco Wall and Southern Icefields creating an impressive backdrop. You will arrive at Barranco Camp at approximately 3,960 metres, where you will have dinner and rest.

04

Day

Barranco to Karanga Camp

3,960m - 4,035m

Alpine desert

5km

4-5 hours

After breakfast, you begin the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. The climb involves scrambling over sections of rock and using your hands for balance in places. It is non-technical and does not require specialist climbing equipment, but it provides an exciting and physically engaging section of the trek. After reaching the top of the wall, the trail continues across a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp at approximately 4,035 metres. The day’s relatively short distance gives you time to rest and continue preparing your body for the summit ascent. After dinner, you will rest at camp.

05

Day

Karanga to Barafu Camp

4,035m - 4,673m

Alpine desert

4km

4-5 hours

After breakfast, you leave Karanga Camp and continue toward Barafu Camp at approximately 4,673 metres, the main base camp for the summit attempt. The trail becomes increasingly barren as you move deeper into the alpine desert zone, with little vegetation surviving at this elevation. Although the distance is short, the altitude gain is significant. Upon reaching Barafu Camp, you will have time to rest and recover. Your guide will conduct a summit briefing and final equipment check, ensuring that you are properly prepared for the overnight ascent. An early dinner will be served before you rest for several hours in preparation for the summit climb.

06

Day

Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

4,673m - 5,895m - 3,100m

Arctic to forest

17km

12-16 hours

You will wake around midnight and begin the final ascent toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa. The climb begins in darkness, with your headlamp lighting the volcanic trail as you slowly ascend toward the crater rim. Your guide will maintain a steady and controlled pace to conserve energy and help manage the effects of altitude. As dawn approaches, you will reach the summit area and continue toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. UHURU PEAK – 5,895 M After reaching the summit, you will have time to celebrate your achievement and take photographs before beginning the descent. You will descend toward Barafu Camp before continuing down through the changing ecological zones toward Mweka Camp at approximately 3,100 metres. The descent is long, but the lower elevation and warmer conditions provide welcome relief after the summit climb. You will arrive at Mweka Camp for dinner and a well-earned rest.

07

Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi/Arusha

3,100m - 1,640m - 900m

Rainforest

10km hike + drive

3-4 hours hiking

After breakfast, you begin the final descent through the lush montane rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail gradually descends through the forest as the mountain environment changes from high-altitude terrain to a warm, dense tropical landscape. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate. You will then meet your vehicle for the transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, where you can check into your hotel, enjoy a hot shower and relax after completing your Mount Kilimanjaro trek.
