7 Days / 6 Nights Mount Kilimanjaro Trek

7 Days Northern Approach

The Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro route that approaches the mountain from the north, close to the Kenyan border. This side of the mountain is generally drier, quieter and less crowded than the southern approaches. The route provides a gradual ascent through a variety of landscapes, from cultivated farmland and pine forest to open moorland, alpine desert and the high-altitude Arctic Zone. It also passes beneath the dramatic peaks of Mawenzi, including the beautiful Mawenzi Tarn, before crossing the Saddle toward Kibo. After reaching the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the descent follows the Marangu Route, allowing you to experience a different side of Kilimanjaro.

The Expedition

7 days on the mountain.

A closer look at each stage of the journey.

01

Day

Moshi/Arusha to Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

900m - 1,950m - 2,625m

Rainforest

~3 hour drive + 8km hiking

4-5 hours hiking

After breakfast, you will meet your guide and complete a final equipment and gear check before beginning the drive toward the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The journey takes you around the mountain toward Rongai Gate, close to the Kenyan border. This quieter approach provides a noticeably different experience from the more frequently used southern routes. After completing registration and park entry formalities at the gate, the trek begins through cultivated farmland before gradually entering the pine forest. The trail climbs steadily toward Simba Camp at approximately 2,625 metres, where you will have dinner and settle in for your first night on the mountain.

02

Day

Simba Camp to Second Cave

2,625m - 3,450m

Moorland

6km

3-4 hours

After breakfast, you leave Simba Camp and continue climbing as the pine forest gradually gives way to open moorland. The trail provides increasingly wide views across the northern side of Kilimanjaro, with the dramatic spires of Mawenzi beginning to appear as you gain elevation. The steady ascent continues toward Second Cave Camp at approximately 3,450 metres. After arriving at camp, you will have time to rest, enjoy your meals and take in the surrounding mountain scenery.

03

Day

Second Cave to Kikelelwa Camp

3,450m - 3,600m

Moorland

6km

3-4 hours

Today’s trek is shorter and follows a gradual ascent through open moorland. The trail continues toward the Mawenzi side of the mountain, with increasingly impressive views across the surrounding landscape. On clear days, the northern plains and parts of Kenya can be seen in the distance. You will continue to Kikelelwa Camp at approximately 3,600 metres, situated beneath the dramatic slopes of Mawenzi. The relatively gentle pace of the day provides valuable time for your body to adjust to the increasing altitude before the higher stages of the trek. Dinner will be served at camp before an overnight rest.

04

Day

Kikelelwa to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

3,600m - 4,330m

Alpine desert

5km

4-5 hours

After breakfast, you leave Kikelelwa Camp and begin a steeper ascent toward Mawenzi Tarn. As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes increasingly sparse and the landscape changes into the alpine desert zone. The trail leads toward one of the most spectacular camping locations on Kilimanjaro, Mawenzi Tarn Camp at approximately 4,330 metres. The camp sits beside a small alpine tarn and beneath the dramatic volcanic spires of Mawenzi. You will have time to rest and take in the remarkable surroundings while allowing your body additional time to adapt to the higher altitude. After dinner, you will rest at camp.

05

Day

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

4,330m - 4,700m

Alpine desert

8km

5-6 hours

After breakfast, you leave Mawenzi Tarn and begin crossing the broad, exposed Saddle, the high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you approach the slopes of Kibo, the highest volcanic cone of Kilimanjaro. The trail continues across the Saddle toward Kibo Hut at approximately 4,700 metres, the final overnight stop before the summit. Upon arrival, you will have time to rest and prepare your summit equipment. Your guide will conduct a final summit briefing and equipment check. An early dinner will be served before you rest for several hours in preparation for the midnight summit ascent.

06

Day

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

4,700m - 5,895m - 3,720m

Arctic to moorland

16km

12-16 hours

You will wake around midnight and begin the final ascent toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa. The climb begins in darkness, with a slow and steady ascent over volcanic scree toward the crater rim. Your guide will maintain a controlled pace to help conserve energy and manage the effects of altitude. As you approach the crater rim, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. You will continue toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, aiming to reach the summit around sunrise. UHURU PEAK – 5,895 M After reaching the summit, you will have time to celebrate your achievement and take photographs before beginning the descent. The route descends from Kibo and then joins the Marangu Route, providing a different perspective of the mountain from the northern approach used during the ascent. You will continue downward through the alpine and moorland zones toward Horombo Hut at approximately 3,720 metres. After arriving at Horombo, you will have dinner and a well-earned rest following the long summit day.

07

Day

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Moshi/Arusha

3,720m - 1,860m - 900m

Forest

20km hike + drive

5-7 hours hiking

After breakfast, you begin the final descent from Horombo Hut toward Marangu Gate. The trail gradually passes from the open moorland back into the lush montane rainforest, bringing you through the same lower ecological zones that characterize the Marangu side of Kilimanjaro. As you descend, the air becomes warmer and the vegetation becomes denser, marking the final stage of your trek. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate. You will then meet your vehicle and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, where you can check into your hotel, enjoy a hot shower and relax after completing your Mount Kilimanjaro trek.
