10 Days / 9 Nights Mount Kilimanjaro Trek

10 Days Ultimate Kilimanjaro Experience

The Northern Crater Route is an exceptional Mount Kilimanjaro experience combining gradual acclimatization, remote landscapes and a rarely visited section of the mountain. Beginning on the western side of Kilimanjaro, the route crosses the spectacular Shira Plateau before turning north around Kibo. The northern slopes are considerably quieter than the main southern circuit, offering a more secluded trekking experience with expansive views of the mountain and surrounding landscapes. The route also visits the Northern Crater, one of the least-visited areas of Kilimanjaro, before continuing toward the summit. With several days spent at progressively higher elevations and additional time for acclimatization, this itinerary provides a gradual approach to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. After the summit, the descent follows the Mweka Route through the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro.

The Expedition

10 days on the mountain.

A closer look at each stage of the journey.

01

Day

Moshi/Arusha to Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

900m - 2,250m - 2,850m

Rainforest

~2 hour drive + 6km hiking

3-4 hours hiking

The expedition begins with a final equipment and gear check at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha before driving west toward Londorossi Gate at approximately 2,250 metres. After completing registration and park entry formalities, the trek begins through the dense montane rainforest. The trail climbs steadily through lush vegetation, with tall trees, moss-covered surroundings and giant ferns creating a cool forest environment. You may also hear or spot colobus monkeys in the canopy. The trek continues toward Mti Mkubwa Camp at approximately 2,850 metres, where you will have dinner and settle in for your first night on the mountain.

02

Day

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

2,850m - 3,610m

Moorland

8km

5-6 hours

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind as the trail climbs toward the vast Shira Plateau. The vegetation gradually changes into heather and moorland, opening up to expansive views across the western side of Kilimanjaro. As you gain elevation, the snow-capped summit of Kibo becomes increasingly prominent above the plateau. You will continue toward Shira 1 Camp at approximately 3,610 metres, where you will have time to rest and enjoy the open mountain landscape before dinner.

03

Day

Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp

3,610m - 3,850m

Moorland

7km

4-5 hours

Today’s trek is deliberately gentle, giving your body additional time to adjust to the increasing altitude. You continue across the open Shira Plateau, following a gradual trail toward Shira 2 Camp at approximately 3,850 metres. The wide plateau provides impressive views of the surrounding volcanic landscape and Kibo. Upon arrival at camp, you will have time to rest and, depending on weather conditions, undertake a short acclimatization walk before returning to camp for dinner.

04

Day

Shira 2 to Moir Hut

3,850m - 4,200m

Alpine desert

14km

5-7 hours

Today the route begins its transition toward the remote northern side of Kilimanjaro. Leaving the main Shira trail, you head north around the western flank of Kibo, moving away from the busier southern circuit. The landscape becomes increasingly volcanic and barren as you enter the alpine desert zone. You will continue toward Moir Hut at approximately 4,200 metres, a remote camp surrounded by dramatic volcanic terrain and expansive views. After arriving, you will have time to rest and enjoy dinner in the quiet mountain environment.

05

Day

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

4,200m - 4,020m

Alpine desert

12km

5-7 hours

After breakfast, you continue the gradual circumnavigation of Kilimanjaro along the northern slopes. The trail passes through increasingly remote volcanic terrain, with broad views toward the northern plains and the Kenyan side of the mountain. Although you remain at high altitude, the day’s route has a slight net descent, providing valuable time for continued acclimatization. You will arrive at Buffalo Camp at approximately 4,020 metres, where you will have dinner and rest.

06

Day

Buffalo Camp to Third Cave

4,020m - 3,870m

Alpine desert

8km

5-6 hours

Today’s trek is relatively gentle, with the trail continuing around the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. The route follows the high-altitude landscape beneath the northern side of Kibo before gradually descending toward Third Cave Camp at approximately 3,870 metres. This slight descent provides another opportunity for your body to consolidate the altitude gained during the preceding days. After arriving at camp, you will have time to rest, enjoy dinner and prepare for the final approach toward the summit.

07

Day

Third Cave to School Hut

3,870m - 4,750m

Alpine desert

5km

4-5 hours

After breakfast, you begin the short but steady ascent toward School Hut at approximately 4,750 metres. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you approach the upper slopes of Kibo. Because the summit attempt will begin around midnight, today’s trek is deliberately kept short to allow plenty of time for rest and preparation. Upon arrival at School Hut, you will have time to settle in while your guide conducts a final summit briefing and equipment check. An early dinner will be served before you rest in preparation for the summit ascent.

08

Day

School Hut to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

4,750m - 5,895m - 3,100m

Arctic to rainforest

16km total

12-16 hours

You begin the day with an ascent toward the upper slopes of Kibo and the Northern Crater, one of the least-visited areas of Mount Kilimanjaro. The Northern Crater provides a rare opportunity to experience a remote section of the mountain away from the main trekking routes. The stark volcanic landscape, crater walls and surrounding ice fields create a dramatic high-altitude environment. From the crater area, the route continues toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. UHURU PEAK – 5,895 M After reaching the summit, you will have time to celebrate your achievement and take photographs before descending back toward the crater area. You will spend the night at Crater Camp, subject to route and mountain conditions, providing a unique opportunity to experience the high-altitude crater environment.

09

Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi/Arusha

3,100m - 1,640m - 900m

Rainforest

10km hike + drive

3-4 hours hiking

After breakfast, you leave the high-altitude crater environment and begin the long descent toward the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro. The route descends through the arctic and alpine desert zones, gradually reaching moorland before continuing toward the lower slopes. As the altitude decreases, vegetation becomes increasingly abundant and the environment becomes warmer. You will continue toward Mweka Camp at approximately 3,100 metres, where you will have dinner and rest after the demanding summit and descent stages.

10

Day

Rest Day in Moshi/Arusha

900m

Town

0km

Full day rest

After breakfast, you begin the final descent through the lush montane rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail gradually descends through the forest, bringing you back into the warmer environment of the lower slopes. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate. You will then meet your vehicle for the transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, where you can check into your hotel, enjoy a hot shower and relax after completing the Northern Crater Kilimanjaro expedition.
