4 Days / 3 Nights Mount Meru Acclimatization Trek

4 Days / 3 Nights Acclimatization Trek

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and an excellent acclimatization trek before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro. Standing at 4,566 metres, the trek provides valuable experience with high-altitude hiking while taking you through some of the most diverse landscapes of Arusha National Park. The lower slopes are rich in wildlife, with opportunities to encounter buffalo, giraffe and colobus monkeys as you trek through the forest. As you climb higher, the landscape changes from montane forest to open moorland and alpine terrain. The summit of Socialist Peak at 4,566 metres offers spectacular views across northern Tanzania, including impressive views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. An armed ranger accompanies the expeditioners along the route as required within Arusha National Park because of the presence of wildlife on the lower sections of the mountain.

The Expedition

4 days on the mountain.

A closer look at each stage of the journey.

01

Day

Arusha to Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

1,400m - 1,500m - 2,514m

Montane forest

~1 hour drive + 10km hiking

4-6 hours hiking

After breakfast, you will meet your guide for a final equipment check before departing from your hotel in Arusha. A short drive takes you to Momella Gate, where you will complete the park registration and entry formalities. An armed ranger will join the group in accordance with Arusha National Park regulations. The trek begins through the lower forest, where the trail passes through an area rich in wildlife. Buffalo, giraffe and colobus monkeys are among the animals that may be encountered along the route. You will continue climbing gradually through the forest toward Miriakamba Hut at approximately 2,514 metres. Upon arrival, you will have time to settle in, rest and enjoy dinner before an overnight stay at the hut.

02

Day

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

2,514m - 3,570m

Moorland

8km

3-5 hours

After breakfast, you leave Miriakamba Hut and begin the ascent toward Saddle Hut. The trail gradually leaves the forest behind as the vegetation changes into open moorland. As you gain elevation, the views become more expansive, with the surrounding landscapes and, on clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro visible in the distance. You will arrive at Saddle Hut at approximately 3,570 metres, where you will have lunch and time to rest. If conditions permit, an optional acclimatization hike can be made to Little Meru at approximately 3,820 metres before returning to Saddle Hut. After dinner, you will rest early in preparation for the summit attempt.

03

Day

Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut

3,570m - 4,566m - 2,514m

Alpine to forest

12km

10-12 hours

You will wake around midnight and begin the summit ascent while the mountain is still quiet and dark. The trail climbs steadily toward Socialist Peak at 4,566 metres, with sections becoming increasingly steep as you approach the summit. The pace will be slow and controlled to help manage the altitude and conserve energy. You aim to reach the summit around sunrise. From Socialist Peak, you can enjoy panoramic views across northern Tanzania, with Mount Kilimanjaro visible on clear mornings. After spending some time at the summit, you begin the descent toward Saddle Hut before continuing through the moorland and forest to Miriakamba Hut. This is the longest and most physically demanding day of the trek.

04

Day

Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate to Arusha

2,514m - 1,500m - 1,400m

Forest

10km hike + drive

2-3 hours hiking

After breakfast, you begin the final descent from Miriakamba Hut toward Momella Gate. The trail passes once again through the montane forest, providing another opportunity to observe wildlife along the lower slopes. Upon reaching Momella Gate, you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your Mount Meru trekking certificate. You will then meet your vehicle and transfer back to Arusha, where you will check into your hotel and have time to rest and recover after completing the trek.
