Marangu Route – Uhuru Peak – Marangu Routes

4 Days Fastest Hut-to-Hut Route

The 4-day Marangu Express is the fastest hut-based itinerary to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route offering overnight accommodation in permanent mountain huts rather than tents. This itinerary is designed for trekkers with limited time, strong fitness and preferably previous high-altitude trekking experience. Unlike the longer 5- or 6-day Marangu itineraries, there is no additional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. This makes the trek significantly more demanding, particularly because the summit attempt and descent are completed in one very long day. The route takes you through Kilimanjaro’s changing vegetation zones, from lush montane rainforest to open moorland, alpine desert and finally the arctic summit zone. The ultimate goal is Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.

The Expedition

4 days on the mountain.

A closer look at each stage of the journey.

01

Day

Moshi/Arusha to Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

900m - 1,860m - 2,700m

Rainforest

~1 hour drive + 8km hiking

4-5 hours hiking

After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, you will meet your mountain crew and have a final check of your trekking equipment before driving to Marangu Gate, located at approximately 1,860 metres. At the gate, your guide will complete the registration and entry formalities while the porters prepare the equipment. Once everything is ready, the trek begins. The trail enters the beautiful montane rainforest, where the path is surrounded by tall trees, dense vegetation and moss-covered forest. You may also encounter monkeys and a variety of birdlife along the way. The trek continues gradually through the forest before reaching Mandara Hut at approximately 2,700 metres, your first overnight stop. Weather and time permitting, there may be an opportunity for a short walk to Maundi Crater before returning to the hut. After dinner, you will rest early in preparation for the following day’s trek.

02

Day

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

2,700m - 3,720m

Moorland

12km

6-8 hours

After breakfast, you leave Mandara Hut and continue climbing gradually as the dense rainforest gives way to open moorland and heath vegetation. As you gain elevation, the landscape becomes more open, with impressive views of Kibo and Mawenzi, the two major volcanic cones of Kilimanjaro. The trail continues steadily toward Horombo Hut. Since this is the express itinerary and there is no additional acclimatization day at Horombo, your guide will maintain a controlled pace, allowing you to conserve energy for the summit attempt. You arrive at Horombo Hut at approximately 3,720 metres, where you will have time to eat, rest and prepare for the following day’s ascent. Dinner will be served in the evening, followed by an early rest.

03

Day

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

3,720m - 4,700m

Alpine desert

10km

6-8 hours

Today you leave Horombo and cross the high-altitude Saddle, the broad desert-like area separating Mawenzi and Kibo. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the alpine desert zone. The trail is exposed and the effects of altitude become more noticeable, so maintaining a slow and steady pace is important. The route continues across the Saddle toward Kibo Hut at approximately 4,700 metres, the final overnight stop before the summit. Upon arrival, you will have an early dinner and prepare your summit equipment. Your guide will brief you on the summit attempt, including pacing, clothing, hydration and safety procedures. You will then rest for several hours before beginning the summit climb around midnight. Early dinner: Approximately 17:00. Rest: Evening until midnight. Summit departure: Approximately 00:00

04

Day

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Marangu Gate

4,700m - 5,895m - 1,860m - 900m

Arctic to rainforest

27km hiking + drive

14-18 hours

After reaching the summit, you will have a short period to celebrate, take photographs and enjoy the achievement before beginning the descent. The descent takes you back to Kibo Hut, where you will have a short rest and collect your remaining belongings before continuing down toward Horombo and eventually Marangu Gate. The descent through the moorland and rainforest provides a dramatic change from the barren summit landscape encountered earlier in the day. After reaching Marangu Gate, you will complete the exit formalities and receive your summit certificate before transferring back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
