Marangu Route – Uhuru Peak – Marangu Route

6 Days "Coca-Cola" Route with Huts

The Marangu Route, popularly known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only Kilimanjaro route offering overnight accommodation in permanent mountain huts rather than tents. Its gradual, well-established trail and additional acclimatization day make it one of the more approachable routes for trekkers who prefer hut accommodation. The route takes you through Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecological zones, beginning in the lush rainforest before continuing through moorland, alpine desert and the high arctic zone around the summit. The itinerary includes an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, with an optional hike toward Zebra Rocks, allowing trekkers additional time to adjust to the altitude before continuing toward Kibo and the summit.

The Expedition

6 days on the mountain.

A closer look at each stage of the journey.

01

Day

Moshi/Arusha to Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

900m - 1,860m - 2,700m

Rainforest

~1 hour drive + 8km hiking

4-5 hours hiking

After breakfast, you will meet your guide for a final equipment and gear check before departing from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. The drive to Marangu Gate at approximately 1,860 metres is relatively short. Upon arrival, your guide will complete the park registration and entry procedures while the trekking team prepares for the climb. The trail begins by entering the lush montane rainforest, where tall trees, dense vegetation and moss-covered surroundings create a cool and beautiful environment. Colobus monkeys and other forest wildlife may be seen along the trail. You will continue gradually uphill through the forest before reaching Mandara Hut at approximately 2,700 metres, the first overnight stop. After arriving at the hut, you will have time to settle in and rest. Weather and time permitting, you may take a short walk toward Maundi Crater for views across the surrounding landscape. Dinner will be served at the hut before an overnight rest.

02

Day

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

2,700m - 3,720m

Moorland

12km

6-8 hours

After breakfast, you leave Mandara Hut and continue climbing as the rainforest gradually gives way to open moorland and heath vegetation. The landscape becomes increasingly expansive, and you begin to experience the characteristic high-altitude scenery of Kilimanjaro. On clear days, you can see the distinctive peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo rising above the surrounding landscape. The trail continues steadily toward Horombo Hut at approximately 3,720 metres. Upon arrival, you will have time to rest, enjoy your meals and prepare for the following day’s acclimatization hike.

03

Day

Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

3,720m - 4,390m - 3,720m

Alpine

10km round trip

4-5 hours

Today is dedicated to acclimatization. After a relaxed breakfast, you will undertake an optional acclimatization hike toward Zebra Rocks at approximately 4,390 metres. The hike provides an opportunity to gain additional altitude during the day before returning to sleep at the lower elevation of Horombo Hut. Zebra Rocks are named for their distinctive black-and-white striped appearance and provide an interesting feature within the high-altitude landscape. After the hike, you will return to Horombo Hut for lunch and have the remainder of the day to rest, recover and prepare for the ascent toward Kibo. Dinner will be served at the hut before an early night’s rest.

04

Day

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

3,720m - 4,700m

Alpine desert

10km

6-8 hours

After breakfast, you leave Horombo Hut and begin the gradual ascent toward Kibo Hut. The trail crosses the famous Saddle, the broad and exposed high-altitude area lying between the volcanic cones of Mawenzi and Kibo. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse, creating a stark, almost lunar landscape. The steady ascent continues across the alpine desert toward Kibo Hut at approximately 4,700 metres, the final overnight stop before the summit. Upon arrival, you will have time to rest and prepare your summit equipment. Your guide will conduct a final briefing covering the summit ascent, pacing, clothing, hydration and safety procedures. An early dinner will be served before you rest for several hours in preparation for the midnight summit departure.

05

Day

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

4,700m - 5,895m - 3,720m

Arctic to moorland

16km

12-16 hours

You will wake around midnight and begin the final ascent toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest elevation in Africa. The climb begins in darkness, with a slow and steady ascent over volcanic scree toward the crater rim. The pace is deliberately controlled to conserve energy and help manage the effects of altitude. You will continue toward the crater rim before proceeding to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. Reaching the summit around sunrise provides spectacular views across the surrounding landscape as the first light appears over Tanzania. UHURU PEAK – 5,895 M After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs at the summit, you will begin the descent. The route follows the same trail back toward Kibo Hut, where you will have a short rest before continuing down toward Horombo Hut. The descent provides welcome relief from the high-altitude environment as you return through the alpine and moorland zones. You will arrive at Horombo Hut at approximately 3,720 metres, where dinner and a well-earned night’s rest await.

06

Day

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Moshi/Arusha

3,720m - 1,860m - 900m

Forest

20km hike + drive

5-7 hours hiking

After breakfast, you begin the final descent from Horombo Hut toward Marangu Gate. The trail takes you back through the moorland before gradually returning to the lush montane rainforest encountered on the first day. The changing vegetation provides a fitting conclusion to the trek. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate. You will then meet your vehicle for the transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, where you can check into your hotel, enjoy a hot shower and relax after completing your Mount Kilimanjaro trek.
