Lemosho Route – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Route

8 Days Most Scenic Western Approach

The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic approaches to Mount Kilimanjaro, beginning on the quiet western side of the mountain before crossing the spectacular Shira Plateau and joining the Southern Circuit. The route offers an excellent acclimatization profile, with gradual altitude gain and a key “climb high, sleep low” day at Lava Tower before descending into the Barranco Valley. As the trek progresses, the landscape changes from lush rainforest to open moorland, alpine desert and finally the Arctic Zone around the summit. The route also includes the famous Barranco Wall, a non-technical rock scramble, before continuing toward Barafu Camp for the summit attempt. After reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the descent follows the Mweka Route through the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro.

The Expedition

8 days on the mountain.

A closer look at each stage of the journey.

01

Day

Moshi/Arusha to Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

900m - 2,250m - 2,850m

Rainforest

~2 hour drive + 6km hiking

3-4 hours hiking

After breakfast at your hotel, you will meet your guide for a final equipment and gear check before beginning the drive west toward Londorossi Gate at approximately 2,250 metres. After completing the registration and park entry procedures, the trek begins through the lush and dense montane rainforest. The trail winds through tall trees and thick vegetation as you gradually gain altitude toward Mti Mkubwa Camp at approximately 2,850 metres. Upon arrival at camp, you will have time to settle in, enjoy dinner and rest before the following day’s trek.

02

Day

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

2,850m - 3,610m

Moorland

8km

5-6 hours

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and continue climbing toward the vast Shira Plateau. As the vegetation becomes lower and more open, the landscape changes into moorland, with expansive views across the western side of Kilimanjaro. You will continue toward Shira 1 Camp at approximately 3,610 metres, where you may have your first clear views of Kibo, the highest volcanic cone of Kilimanjaro. After arriving at camp, you will have time to rest and enjoy the spectacular high-altitude surroundings before dinner.

03

Day

Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp

3,610m - 3,850m

Moorland

7km

4-5 hours

Today’s trek is deliberately paced to give your body additional time to acclimatize to the increasing altitude. You continue across the open Shira Plateau, with views toward Kibo and the surrounding volcanic landscape. The trail gradually gains elevation toward Shira 2 Camp at approximately 3,850 metres. Upon arrival, you will have time to rest. Depending on weather conditions and how the group is feeling, your guide may recommend a short acclimatization walk before returning to camp. Dinner will be served before an overnight rest.

04

Day

– SHIRA 2 CAMP TO LAVA TOWER TO BARRANCO CAMP

3,850m - 4,600m - 3,960m

Alpine desert

10km

6-8 hours

Today is an important acclimatization day following the principle of “climb high, sleep low.” You leave Shira 2 Camp and gradually ascend toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you enter the alpine desert zone. After reaching Lava Tower, you begin descending toward the spectacular Barranco Valley. The descent allows you to sleep at a lower elevation than the highest point reached during the day, helping your body adapt to the altitude. You will arrive at Barranco Camp at approximately 3,960 metres, situated beneath the impressive Barranco Wall and surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. After dinner, you will rest at camp in preparation for the following day’s trek.

05

Day

Barranco to Karanga Camp

3,960m - 4,035m

Alpine desert

5km

4-5 hours

After breakfast, you begin the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. The climb involves scrambling over sections of rock and using your hands for balance in places. It is non-technical and does not require specialist climbing equipment. After reaching the top of the wall, the trail continues across a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp at approximately 4,035 metres. Although the day’s distance is relatively short, the terrain provides a good physical challenge while allowing continued acclimatization. After arriving at camp, you will have time to rest and prepare for the ascent toward Barafu Camp.

06

Day

Karanga to Barafu Camp

4,035m - 4,673m

Alpine desert

4km

4-5 hours

After breakfast, you leave Karanga Camp and continue toward Barafu Camp at approximately 4,673 metres, the main base camp for the summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you climb deeper into the alpine desert zone. The distance is relatively short, but the significant altitude gain requires a slow and steady pace. Upon reaching Barafu Camp, you will have lunch before resting and preparing for the summit attempt. Your guide will conduct a final equipment check and summit briefing, covering the expected conditions, pacing and safety procedures. An early dinner will be served before you rest for several hours in preparation for the midnight ascent.

07

Day

Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

4,673m - 5,895m - 3,100m

Arctic to forest

17km

12-16 hours

You will wake around midnight and begin the final ascent toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa. The climb begins in darkness, with a slow and controlled ascent over volcanic scree toward the crater rim. Your guide will maintain a steady pace to help conserve energy and manage the effects of altitude. As dawn approaches, you will continue toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. UHURU PEAK – 5,895 MAfter reaching the summit, you will have time to celebrate your achievement and take photographs before beginning the descent. You will descend toward Barafu Camp before continuing through the changing ecological zones toward Mweka Camp at approximately 3,100 metres. The descent is long, but the lower elevation provides welcome relief after the summit climb. Upon arriving at Mweka Camp, you will have dinner and a well-earned rest.

08

Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi/Arusha

3,100m - 1,640m - 900m

Rainforest

10km hike + drive

3-4 hours hiking

After breakfast, you begin the final descent through the lush montane rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail gradually descends through the forest as the environment changes from high-altitude terrain to dense tropical vegetation. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate. You will then meet your vehicle for the transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, where you can check into your hotel, enjoy a hot shower and relax after completing your Mount Kilimanjaro trek.
